About event

On 22 March, a new series of unique contemporary plays “Pārmija” starts in Latvian culture life with its first episode. Once a month, on Sundays, culture and art venue Hanzas Perons will welcome its audiences to enjoy two high quality pieces created in Latvia and abroad in the field of theatre, music, art or dance. That will include exhibitions or performances which had been seen only by restricted viewers before and have been given great reviews both by viewers and critics.

Official partner of the “Pārmija” series – the International New Theatre Festival HOMO NOVUS – on episode 1 of the “Pārmija” series on 22 March at 2 PM and at 8.30 PM will offer a dance play by Estonia’s most popular choreographer Mart Kangro called “Past Perfect”. Estonia’s most renowned choreographer Mart Kangro’s new solo play is about remembering and memory lost that always goes hand in hand. How do we decide what to remember and what to forget? Are we that what we remember or what we choose not to remember? Does there exist historical memory? And social? What, after all, is that who remembers something? What story does this bruise tell? And this smell? And this bomb explosion hole?

At 4 PM and 7 PM episode 1 will feature audiovisual motion play “Interview with Francis Bacon” by Laura Dišlere and Madara Dišlere with choreography by Liene Grava (contemporary dance) and Simona Orinska (butō) and music by Mārcis Auziņš. This is a contemporary theatre play based on the provocative work and personality of English painter Francis Bacon. An unprecedented attempt to mix contemporary dance and contemplative butō scenery with the live sculpture using human body art as an element. Laura Dišlere created this play in the framework of her diploma piece, which had been shown just once by now and has received the highest grade and very good reviews.

Both plays will be shown twice, so that more people could see them. At 15.30 and at 20.00 there will a conversation with the creative teams of “Interview with Francis Bacon” and “Past Perfect” take place.

The following episodes of “Pārmija” will offer meeting an independent theatre group KVADRIFRONS, pianist Reinis Zariņš, choreographers Krišjānis Sants and Ēriks Ēriksons and other great artists. The special partner of this year will be the International New Theatre Festival HOMO NOVUS that is celebrating its 20th anniversary and therefore will add several internationally recognised pieces to the programme of “Pārmija”.

The first episodes of the festival are going to take place in March, April and May, followed by new episode in autumn, featuring also some premiers.

The new culture event is going to be the place where the spectator meets the artist. The episodes will be extended to conversations with the creative teams of the plays. The future plan is to also offer new pieces, a special programme for children, as well as going beyond Riga, thus expanding the range of spectators.
