On 20 November in Riga, at Hanzas Perons, a special event will take place – the legendary British band The Tiger Lillies return with an entirely new program, Serenade from the Sewer. This grotesquely beautiful story sheds light on life at the margins – the strange, the dark, and the outcast.
Winners of the Olivier Award and Grammy nominees, in more than 35 years of creative work, The Tiger Lillies have toured the world, released dozens of critically acclaimed albums, and left a lasting imprint on the theatre stage – from the cult classic Shockheaded Peter to this year’s production A Macbeth Song in Barcelona.
The group’s leader, Martyn Jacques, drew inspiration from his experiences in London’s Soho in the 1980s, where he spent countless hours observing daily life through his window – drug dealers, prostitutes, addicts, and gangsters. Serenade from the Sewer is a melancholic yet ironic reflection of these memories, where sorrow intertwines with grotesque characters, and tragedy is laced with subtle humor.
The audience can expect songs from the brand-new album, as well as some of The Tiger Lillies’ most beloved compositions. Their performances are a provocative fusion of cabaret, punk, opera, and theatre – described by The Guardian as “a provocative mix of anarchic opera and gypsy street theatre”, and by The New York Times as “one of the most unique and challenging acts in contemporary performing arts.”
Don’t miss this opportunity – on 20 November at Hanzas Perons in Riga, experience a truly unique evening with The Tiger Lillies.
