On Sunday, November 9, the cultural venue Hanzas Perons in Riga will host the performance "A Knife Stuck in the Heart", based on the poetry of Federico García Lorca and the music of Haralds Sīmanis.
The production features actors Guna Zariņa and Gerds Lapoška, musicians Ilze Grunte, Andris Grunte, and Zane Šmite, with visuals by artist Dace Ignatova. It is inspired by Lorca’s poetry and Sīmanis’ music, originally composed for the 1980s production "The Scream", initiated by actress Marina Janaus in collaboration with scenographer Ilmārs Blumbergs and director Viktors Jansons.
Now, after several decades, this music is reborn in a new interpretation – "A Knife Stuck in the Heart", which premiered in May 2025 at Hanzas Perons.
Federico García Lorca’s work blends Spanish folklore and surrealist features typical of his era. His central themes are death and longing. As Lorca once wrote:
“In every country, death is an end. It arrives, and the curtains fall. But not in Spain. In Spain, the curtains rise. Many people live behind walls until the day they die, and only then are they pulled into the sunlight. The Spanish dead are more alive than anywhere in the world; their profile is sharper than a razor. To joke about death and silently observe it is common for Spaniards.”
Haralds Sīmanis is a legendary Latvian singer-songwriter. A musical guardian of moral consciousness, he was inspired by the rhythms and moods of Spanish and Romani music in this song cycle. The new staging revives music that has remained unheard for more than 30 years.
