On two evenings, September 11 and 12, the cultural space Hanzas Perons will host a chamber music event entitled Arvo, featuring the chamber music of renowned Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, arranged by artist Monika Korpa.
‘Sound can kill. If so, then it is possible that there is a sound that can do the opposite. And the distance between these extremes is enormous. You are free, you can choose. In art, everything is possible, but not everything is necessary,’ said the composer Pärt and he has often been quoted since.
It would be pointless to rewrite what is already known about the Master, whose entire life seems to have been a quest for purity of thought, space and sound, because ‘silence must always be longer.’ This is Arvo Pärt’s conviction, which he himself, his music and listeners around the world follow.
‘This music is about silence. The sounds are meant to envelop the silence.’ Following this idea – prolonging and suspending silence in a space filled with sounds that are familiar to listeners in unfamiliar combinations, as well as sounds that are more unfamiliar, perhaps heard for the first time – is the leitmotif of the upcoming chamber music evening at Hanzas perons.
‘As a set designer, when I listen to Arvo Pärt’s music, I imagine or even feel a space that is inexplicable and timeless. Almost always. “Almost” depends on your state of mind when listening. But it is a possibility. For everyone, in my opinion. To be somewhere else for a moment,’ says artist Monika Korpa (formerly Pormale).
On both evenings, the audience will be enveloped in sound by pianist Reinis Zariņš, Perona kvartets (Konstantīns Paturskis, violin; Aleksejs Bahirs, violin; Pēteris Trasuns, viola; and Dace Zālīte-Zilberte, cello), Savvaļas oktets, featuring Diana Ozoliņa, Ieva Upatniece, Mareta Prikule, Dace Zālīte-Zilberte, Jānis Rinkulis, Emma Aleksandra Bandeniece, Mārtiņš Turss, and Ainārs Paukšēns on cellos, young flutist Nellija Šāvēja and others. These musicians do not often play together, but over the last season they have been an integral part of other surprises at Perons. Namely, they met at the events Ligeti 100 km/h and Gordoniāde. The programme for the upcoming concert in September will feature Arvo Pärt's well-known works Fratres and Pari Intervallo in rarely performed arrangements for cello octet. Reinis Zariņš will perform the lesser-known Partita Op. 2, as well as Für Alina, and together with Konstantīns Paturskis they will perform Passacaglia. Other compositions by Arvo Pärt for piano, strings, wind instruments and... voice will also be performed. Because the human voice is the most beautiful instrument of all. Arvo Pärt is convinced of this.
A limited number of tickets are available for each evening.
Prices will increase as the concert date approaches.
Doors open from 18.00.
